Stringed Instrument Tip
When adding a new string or a set of new strings, use a sharpened No. 2 lead pencil to run through the string grooves of the nut leaving a mark. Then use the point of the pencil lead to leave a mark in the notches of the bridge. This provides a lubricant that will allow the strings to move through the notch and the groove more easily. It will lessen string wear and can help lessen the amount of bridge “lean” as you tune the instrument.
Q: How can you determine the size of instrument for a child?
A: Have the child hold their left arm straight out from their side, shoulder-high, with their palm up. Measure the distance from the base of their neck to the point where their wrist and hand connects. These measurements would correspond with these fractional size instruments:
Q: How is the best way to clean your instrument?
A: If there is the “white” dusting of rosin, simply wipe away with a soft dry cloth. If it needs more than a simple wiping off, use warm water with a mild dishwashing detergent on a soft cloth. Gently rub the soiled areas until clean, then wash these areas with another soft cloth dampened with clean water. Wipe away any excess moisture and make certain it is dry before returning the instrument to the case.
