INSTRUMENT AND BOW MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS
We generally recommend that bows be rehaired and strings replaced every 6-12 months, depending upon usage and environment. We realize it may be difficult to decide when the time is right, and that is why we recommend instruments and bows be professionally inspected at 6 month intervals. We have found that midwinter and midsummer are ideal times for this. We provide this as a FREE service because we recognize how seasonal changes and wear effect both instruments and bows.
When we perform an inspection, we check for such items as open seams, cracks, loose fingerboards, proper bridge position and integrity, soundpost position, worn or ‘false’ strings, peg functioning, endpin integrity, fine tuner functioning, wear or thinning of horsehair, plug and spread wedge integrity, camber and straightness of bow stick, eyelet and screw functioning, and grip wear. By addressing issues as they arise, more costly future repairs are averted. Additionally, the instrument and bow are able to perform at their optimal level. This allows for greater musical enjoyment and growth.
